Senator Fern Shubert came in first place when the votes from a straw poll were counted Saturday night, March 27. The votes were taken from a crowd of approximately 75 Republicans gathered at the gubernatorial debate arranged by BAC-PAC in Greenville, NC. BAC-PAC (Back All Conservatives Political Action Committee) held a debate at Pitt Community College with the assistance of WNCT-TV Channel 9.
Senator Shubert received 44.3 percent of the vote. She led the runner up, Richard Vinroot, by a factor of over 2 to 1. This is Senator Shubert's second straw poll victory following her strong win in Haywood County last Saturday, March 20th. Prior to these wins, Senator Shubert's score in straw polls began to increase. She came in 3rd place in Wake & Transylvania Counties and 4th Place in Mecklenburg County.
The other Republican candidates received the following percentage of votes: Richard Vinroot - 18 percent, Dan Barrett - 14.7 percent, George Little - 9.8 percent, Patrick Ballantine & Bill Cobey - 6.6 percent each. The attendees cast sixty-one votes. Bill Cobey and Patrick Ballantine had supporters at the event, but were not able to attend.
Senator Shubert was happily surprised by her win. "I have not focused on winning straw polls." Senator Shubert said. "I've been focused on getting my message out with the belief that people will respond. These results show that people like what they hear from my campaign. They want a candidate that will open the books in Raleigh and will provide specifics on how we can clean up government, balance the state budget, improve roads and education, and reduce illegal immigration in our state."
"I was very impressed with all the candidates, but Senator Shubert stood out in this debate because of her experience as a state Senator and her detailed knowledge of what is happening with our money in the hands of the Democrats in Raleigh." Said past Pitt County GOP Chairman, Ed Congleton.
The improvement in straw poll ratings comes shortly after a new poll released through NC Spin shows Senator Shubert's support levels rising dramatically.
Senator Shubert's campaign has focused on preserving and creating jobs, improving education and roads, and reducing illegal immigration in North Carolina. More information about Senator Shubert, her background, and her campaign messages can be found at www.ForFern.com.
